Abstract:
This paper analyzes house-building traditions documented at the Late Bronze Age settlement of Burla-3 in the steppe Altai. Structures investigated in 1988 are published for the first time. The authors note the simultaneous existing of at least two types of structures within the settlement area. The first type comprises above-ground or semi-subterranean frame-and-post structures of small size with sub-square pits and corridor-like exits. This type of structure finds parallels at sites of the Late Bronze Age in the region as well as in the territory of Kazakhstan. Finds of adobe clay and a stamp used for ceramic ornamentation in these structures at Burla allow them to be interpreted as utility structures associated with pottery production. The second type of Burla structures is a large two-chamber dwelling. The chamber pits are sub-rectangular in shape, sunk into the subsoil to a depth of 20-40 cm, and were connected by a corridor-passage. The frame of the structure was constructed from posts installed in the central part of the pit and along its walls. A similar structure has been excavated in the Altai at the Sargary-Alekseevka settlement of Rublevo-VI. In general, large single-chamber structures with traces of frame-and-post construction are widely represented both in the region and in adjacent territories at Bronze Age sites. The coexistence of different types of structures at the site, the specialization of buildings, together with a number of other factors, indicates the presence of a certain hierarchical structure among the inhabitants of the settlement and the emergence of specialized groups within the population. Thus, Burla-3 demonstrates the same originality that Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.M. Baipakov identified for special settlement centers of the Late Bronze Age in Kazakhstan
