Abstract:
Chinese silk fabrics from the burials of the Xiongnu aristocracy constitute an important part of the currently known Han inscribed textiles. The collection of Han textiles was expanded during the excavations of the Noyon Uul burial mounds by the joint Russian-Mongolian expedition in 2006–2012. The article analyzes three fragments of Chinese silk fabrics from burial mounds 20 and 22, the ornamentation of which contains hieroglyphic inscriptions. Two fragments have analogies in other burials of the Noyon Uul burial ground and other burial complexes of the Han period. One fragment is unique, analogies to it are currently unknown. ideas about achieving longevity and immortality, ideas about sacred mountains as abodes of immortals, etc Two inscriptions are the names of mountains (mythical or real), and the unambiguous interpretation of the third inscription is currently difficult. The ornaments depict immortals ascending to heaven, auspicious animals, and guardian spirits of the four cardinal directions. The semantics of ornaments and inscriptions are closely related to each other and are based on ancient Chinese cosmological ideas.
