At present, the methods of isotope geochemistry have become an integral part of the archaeological research procedure; it is difficult to imagine a full-fledged study without using the radiocarbon method or stable isotope analysis. However, new opportunities require researchers to not only master the methodology of using natural science approaches, but also to have a strict methodological procedure for using the results obtained. We analyzed the materials of the Scythian period of the Firsovo XIV ground burial ground, which is located in the southern part of the forest-steppe Altai. The results of radiocarbon dating of people and animals turned out to be quite unexpected. The calibrated values for animal samples date back to the middle of the 4th century BC – 1st century BC, and the dates for human bone samples turned out to be within the 12th-9th centuries BC, which shows a systematic deviation from archaeological ideas. The results of the isotope analysis of nitrogen and carbon confirm the fairly intensive consumption of fish by people. In the initial data used to interpret the radiocarbon results, we proceeded from the paradigm that we are dealing with a classical Scythian society, the economy of which is based on cattle breeding. The results obtained were assessed as a deviation from the archaeological norm and required additional verification. Only the introduction of the multi-isotope method into the existing analysis, in order to verify the obtained data, allowed us to explain the current situation. Thus, the 14C study data suggest several stages of their study from the point of view of the principle of historicity.
